Este domingo 4 de marzo tuvo lugar la edición 90º de los Premios de la Academia, en una ceremonia de mucha corrección política que tuvo conducción de parte de Jimmy Kimmel. Hubo pocas referencias a la gestión de Donald Trump, dado que Hollywood tiene su buena cuota de problemas a los que prestar atención. De esta forma, la desigualdad salarial en términos de géneros, la falta de oportunidades para mujeres, la necesidad de una mayor diversidad en la industria y, por supuesto, los abusos sexuales de parte de Harvey Weinstein y Kevin Spacey estuvieron a la orden del día, lo mismo que las referencias al histórico fallido de la edición 2017.
La gran ganadora de la noche fue The Shape of Water, que respondió a sus 13 nominaciones con cuatro estatuillas, dos de las cuales fueron para Mejor Película y Director. La siguió de cerca Dunkirk, que tuvo un buen desempeño en los rubros técnicos y se quedó con tres galardones. No hubo demasiadas sorpresas dado que se mantuvo la tendencia de toda la temporada y, por ejemplo, en el terreno de la actuación se llevaron el oro los cuatro grandes contendientes desde el inicio. Jordan Peele tuvo su momento gracias al guión de Get Out, finalmente Roger Deakins ganó después de haber perdido en 13 injustas oportunidades y también Chile tuvo su momento de brillo cuando Una Mujer Fantástica salió seleccionada como Mejor Película Extranjera. Estuvieron bastante repartidos los honores y la gran mayoría de las nominadas se fue a casa con algo, por fuera de Lady Bird y The Post, honestamente dos de las mejores producciones de esta competencia, que se quedaron con las manos vacías.
