La Academia de Artes y Ciencias de la Televisión de Estados Unidos celebró la 70º edición de los Premios Emmy, en una correcta ceremonia de una conducción poco inspirada a cargo de Michael Che y Colin Jost. El evento venía precedido de un picante adicional dado que Netflix destronó a HBO con la mayor cantidad de nominaciones -112 contra 108-, lo que señalaba todavía más el cambio de época. La contienda entre la cadena y la plataforma de streaming terminó sin vencedor, dado que empataron con un total de 22 premios cada una, pero HBO se llevó los laureles con el premio más importante de la velada: mejor drama para Game of Thrones.
Una gran ganadora de la noche fue The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, comedia para la cual los votantes demostraron mucho cariño. Con un total de cinco estatuillas, fue la más premiada y debería ayudar a ponerla en el radar de muchos. Después de todo, el show de Amazon se impuso sobre otros mucho más populares -y también merecedores de galardones- como Atlanta, Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm o GLOW. En lo que instantáneamente se convirtió en un momento para la posteridad, de esos que aparecerán a lo largo de los años en las listas de lo mejor de los Emmy, Glenn Weiss subió al escenario para hacerse con su premio a Mejor Dirección en Especial de Variedades. El programa pasó años sin recibir siquiera una nominación -hasta la fecha solo había visto premiada a Margo Martindale por sus participaciones- y este año le otorgaron dos estatuillas, una a la actuación de Matthew Rhys y otra a su guión.
